Evil Dead Review (2013)

Growing up in the mid 80’s I missed the original by a few years and was too young for the sequels. It wasn’t until I was much older and (probably for the best) when I finally was introduced to this Horror Classic Trilogy.

In my teens I was addicted to horror movies; Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, Evil Dead, or any Zombie, Slasher flick we could get our hands on. I was particularity fond of the Evil Dead films, I thought Ash was awesome with his Chainsaw and boom stick. Those movies were also funny as well, great laughs with blood and guts.

Skip to now. I’m not even sure when I first saw the Evil Dead remake trailer, but when I did I was floored. I tried not to get too excited but I told myself I’ll be there on opening night for sure. It wasn’t even until the beginning of the week when I started to get pumped for the movie. Now it’s here and boy do I have a story to tell.

The opening scene in a few words is some what of an origins story to really set the tone and raise your blood pressure. Then it’s the traditional cabin in the woods plot, five friends visit a remote cabin and shortly after that they awaken a dormant demonic presence which intends to feast on everyone’s souls.

I will try my best to be spoiler free.

For those familiar to the original you will have a good idea as to where this film is taking you. Though it also keeps you guessing as it does not follow the original step by step. It creates it’s own film, though it’s rooted in The Evil Dead mythology. You feel as if this could have easily been what happened in the original. You will see many overlapping of stories, but I feel that it adds to the movie not take away. If nothing else this film, honors the original and tells a story that  any fan of the series can respect.

There is plenty of blood, dismemberment, possessions, and along the way there will be plenty of twists and turns. I also want you to remember this film was made with no CGI, so all of the crazy effects were practical effects. Along with no CGI comes with a lot of makeup for our actors, and boy does it look good. Those are some of the creepiest characters I’ve ever seen hands down.

Now, lets take it down a notch. It’s not an overly funny film like it’s original, even though that one is probably the least funny out of the original three. It made you laugh, as it was of sorts a new genre for the time horror comedy. Well, this new Evil Dead wants to stand firmly in the horror genre and not so much in the comedy realm. Now, don’t get me wrong there are a few laughs to be had. At one point, you laugh at one of the characters because they literally get beat up by everyone. It’s like wow you are having a terrible day.

I’ll end it with this, go see this movie if your a horror fan or of the original you won’t be disappointed. “Evil Dead is like an exploding Horror Watermelon, you’re gonna need a raincoat”

  2. I do accept as true with all of the ideas you’ve introduced on your post. They’re very convincing and can certainly work. Nonetheless, the posts are too brief for novices. May just you please prolong them a little from next time? Thanks for the post.
